Programs

Camp Tamias programs are designed to support young scientists as they develop curiosity, research skills, and independence. From summer field research to year-round mentorship and peer-led learning, our programs provide students with opportunities to design experiments, collaborate with mentors, and engage with real scientific questions. Together, these initiatives form a learning community where students grow not only as researchers, but also as leaders and teachers.

Year-round Research Projects

Camp Tamias research does not end when summer camp is over. Throughout the year, our faculty mentors guide students as they continue developing independent research projects in biology, environmental science, and computational fields. Students learn how to design experiments, collect and analyze data, and present their findings in formal scientific formats. Many projects culminate in regional and national science fairs, where students gain experience presenting their work to professional judges and the broader scientific community.

Peer-2-Peer instruction

One of the most effective ways to deepen understanding is to teach others. In our peer-to-peer instruction model, advanced students take an active role in mentoring younger participants during research activities and workshops. This structure strengthens the learning community at Camp Tamias: younger students gain approachable guidance, while mentors reinforce their own knowledge, develop leadership skills, and experience the collaborative nature of real scientific work.

Ukrainian Refugees

Camp Tamias is committed to making meaningful scientific opportunities accessible to students displaced by war. Through our Ukrainian Refugee Initiative, we provide scholarships and research mentorship for students who have been forced to leave their homes because of the conflict in Ukraine. Our goal is to give these young scientists stability, community, and the chance to continue exploring their curiosity through hands-on research and collaborative learning.
